Wike Extends lockdown in Rivers State
Following the Corona Virus pandemic, the Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike
has shut down the State and its activities till further notice.

The Governor who said in a statement while interacting with the people on a live phone-in programme on Rythm FM Port Harcourt on Wednesday, that the lockdown of Port Harcourt and Obio Akpor Local Government Areas was not aimed at suffering the people but done to protect the lives of the Rivers.

While addressing the people, Nyesom Wike called on Rivers people to continue praying for the state and government. 

He also urged all Christians in the State to meet online and pray for the government as they are doing everything to protect the lives of the people.

According to the Governor, We need to continue praying for the state, as we hand this state over to God to save our people.

He urged those playing the politics of criticisms to stop as this is not the time for such, but a time to unite and fight the common enemy Corona Virus, irrespective of political parties.

Wike blamed the Federal Government for not taking proactive measures towards the closure of borders and airspace on time. Also stressing that Rivers State has not received any help from the Federal Government during this pandemic time except the 1800 bags of expired rice which he rejected.

He however noted that Port Harcourt and Obio Akpor have a high population and if nothing is done to protect lives there, the casualties will be high. He further states that border closure is been sabotaged by the security agencies.

While commenting on those allowed to move during the lockdown, the Governor pointed out that only those on essential duties are allowed to do so with their means of identification and must be on duty.

He went further to state that he has the mandate of the people and not the few who criticize him, noting that no Government jokes with the welfare of the people, stressing that he will do everything to fulfill the mandates handed to him by the people.

Finally, Governor Nyesom Wike urged the people to bear with the Government as the towns have not been locked before. "I am appealing to our people to bear with us, if we don't do anything now, our people will suffer the consequences".

Governor Wike took over from Rotimi Amaechi in 2014.

Meanwhile, ahead of Edo State's gubernatorial election on Saturday 19 September 2020, the Rivers State Governor Nyesome Wike has decried as impunity the rate at which the security personnel invaded his lodge.

According to channels tv reports, the Governor had claimed to have received a call from the Inspector General of Police asking him to leave the state without any concrete reason. He maintained that as a campaign chairman of the PDP, he has every right to monitor the electoral activities on their behalf.

In response to the allegations, the Police said that the only asked non citizens of the state to vacate so as to avert tensions irrespective of their office. Wike, in his refusal says that no amount of intimidation will make him leave.

Curfew was also placed across the state, restricting movement until the election elapses.
