Exposed! Reasons Behind Imo Speaker's Impeachment

The impeachment of the Imo State House of Assembly Speaker, Hon. Dr. Chiji Chimezie Collins came as a surprise on Friday 13 of November 2020 by the members of the house. Chiji who hails from Eziama Osuama in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State was representing Mbano state constituency.

Before assuming the position as the speaker, he served a term as an honourable member under the platform of All Progressive Grand Alliance and then finally as a speaker under the platform of All Progressive Congress.

He was accused of incompetence, financial misappropriation, high handedness, and other related offences. Haven met the two third of the majority vote, media report stated that about 19 members out of 27 passed a vote of no confidence on him during a plenary session.

Though many sees it as a norm in the Nigerian politics, others views it as act of God. For example, news making wave round his home town shows that he has not been carrying out his responsibilities as a representative, rather he has been accused of been self centered, arrongant, and indifferent.

This makes everyone who learns of his predicament and terms it as an act of God since he has failed to utilize the position for his peoples welfare. While others also sees it as the handwork of his enemies who has been planning for his downfall through various means.

Few months back, on April 20 to be precised, Collins was involved in a huge certificate scandal as he was accused of presenting fake results by an ex-lawmaker representing Ehime Mbano constituency, Duruji Lawma. Nothing was he accused of faking his degrees, he was accused of deceiving the general public as such was threatened of his position. According to further revelations from the ex-lawmaker, Collins never initiated any bill while in the 8th Assembly as a colleague, rather lobbyed his way into becoming speaker as imposed by the former Governor Emeka Ihedioha. Finally, Duruji says that the speakers days were numbered as nothing would save him when the right time for his impeachment comes.

Following his impeachment, Paul Emeziem of Onuimo State Constituency was as a matter of urgency appointed the Speaker and sworn in by the clerk of the house.

Meanwhile, the state Governor Sen. Hope Uzodinma confirmed the impeachment and the swearing in of the incumbent today been Saturday 14 of November 2020. He also assured the current speaker of his support, respect for separation of power, and continous progressive governance.
